Refurbish DVD player hangs computer up

My original DVD player which is a Pioneer model DVR-103 MA has been defective for a while now and so I recently went to the HP parts page to order that original model but HP informs me they don't have that particular model no. in stock and gave me a list of all these parts stores that I could check out to find my original model.

I called TKO Electronics and gave them the part number of my DVD player which is Compaq P/N 240380-001. The sales representative tells me they have that P/N and so I asked her is that DVD player a Pioneer model DVR-103 MA, she tells me no but the model they have which is a Pioneer  DVR-A04 is a compatible substitue part and so I ordered it a week ago.

I received  the DVD today and so I removed my original DVD and replaced it with the refurbished one. Well when I hooked everything back up to my PC and turned on my PC, I would only get to the Windows XP page and it would hang up, it wouldn't take me to my login page where I have to type in my password. This happened several times.

So I opened up my PC again and disconnected the plugs connected to this refurbished DVD and then hooked everything back up to my PC and turned it on and it functioned properly, I was able to login and go on the internet, checked everything out and PC is working normal as before I installed this refurbished DVD player.

So my thinking now is that this refurbished DVD player is not compatible with my system, or this refurbished DVD player is also defective, or is there something I need to do prior to installing this refurbished DVD player. I have notified TKO Electronics and told them everything I mentioned here and the technical support guy tells me maybe I needed the drivers for this DVD player. I doubt that was the problem because like I said earlier my PC would just hang on the Windows XP page.

I told him I'm just going to return the player and want a refund of my money because I believe the DVD player is not compatible or it could be defective. Would appreciate if any of you could give some help or advice concerning this issue of mine, maybe someone knows where I can get the same exact model as my original DVD player...ok thanks a lot!

Re: Refurbish DVD player hangs computer up

As the DVD in question is EIDE/PATA, are you connecting it to a single ribbon cable? \

If so, look at the back of your old DVD drive for a jumper. Change the new drive to reflect the jumper.

IMHO, it is CS, not MASTER/SLAVE.

Re: Refurbish DVD player hangs computer up

There are 2 cables connected in the back of the DVD, one is for the +5 and +12 power supply and the other was a 40 pin ribbon cable. I did notice below where the ribbon cable connects there was a jumper connection across 2 pins and they weren't in the same location as the original DVD. Too bad I can't change the jumper location because I have already returned the refurbish DVD player to TKO but when I order another DVD player I will make sure I have the jumper in the same location as the original DVD player. I'm wondering why didn't their support personnel tell me this when I spoke to him the other day, oh well thanks for your help!
