P.S.- there is only 1 PCI (White) slot empty in my computer and only 1 is listed under the Compaq specifications for expansion slots that you kindly forwarded to me.
However, I do think there is a vacant PCI ie x1 slot once I verify . As noted in prior post, There is a factory installed telephone jack adapter in a slot when I bought it so I have to open and review available. I may do that tonight in light of Professor Hanspuppa's suggestion to use a vacant PCI ie x1 slot if one is available.
I am just not sure if that will deliver as strong a reception but he seems to think it is viable and I know you stated in past he is an expert.
Thanks again Paul.

Hi, David:
Actually, performance-wise a PCIe x1 slot is faster (better) than a PCI slot.
Now, that may not have any effect on reception being vastly improved, but rest assured, it will be no worse over a working card in a PCI slot.
Yes, it changes my assessment. If the card is not present in the device manager at all, then something is wrong with either the card or the slot. Now that you have tried 2 different cards in the same slot with the same result, perhaps the PCI slot is bad.

I think we are tending to that solution Paul. I just spoke to my friend who is coming over tonight to see what he can. He will look at the removal program, you suggested and if that is no good then we will look at the PCI ie x1 slot as an option. He also wants to look at the BIOS.
Thanks Paul. I wil let you know the outcome if we get it fixed.
Best again,
David

Good afternoon Paul. I thought you would be interested to know we tried a third PCI wireless N adapter today from Linksys, brand new. It too came up with the same error code 31 and there was nothing wrong with the adapter as my tech friend first installed in his own desk top and tested to be sure.
He is of the opinion the PCI port is the issue and may be driven by a bad Motherboard. He looked at mine and said it was really not a great unit so we may think about replacing that too. For now, I am going to go with Professor Hanspuppa's idea, and confirmed by yourself, to use the PCI ie x1 adapter. There is a spare x1 port so that will be step next.
Thank you again and have a great weekend. I shall post the result if I get success with the PCI ie port.
Best regards,
David

Hi, David:
I hope the PCIe x1 card works for you. If it works, great!
If it doesn't, I still wouldn't rule out an operating system issue. I would choose that as the problem, and reinstall the operating system, before I declared the system board kaput.
If reinstalling the operating system does nothing to alleviate the issue, then I guess you spring for another PC, unless getting another motherboard for yours is more cost effective.
You have a great weekend too!
Best regards,
Paul

Well I have officially thrown in the towel on this issue! I have now tried the PCIe card Professor Hanspuppa suggested and it did exactly the same thing. I called in Rosewill tech support this morning after an e-mail suggested fix for error code 31 did nothing. They then put me throuigh the same old attempts to reinstall the latest drivers etc. No luck and the tech then pointed to my computer OS and said either it is not good and needs to be removed and reinstalled or the Motherboard is defective.
The basic problem is the Adapter cannot get the driver download and that is that. I think I will leave it alone now and let it suffice for my wife to surf the net and do her e-mail. It wokrs for most things so good enough.
Thanks to all for their help. This one did not come together unfortunatley.
Best to all,
David

Hi, David.
You could get an external USB network adapter. Maybe that would work unless your USB ports are bad too.

USB ports are fine Paul. I actually started out that way and had the adapter and sent it back on the advice of my tech buddy here in favour of the PCI adapter. He would be correct in most cases . I will give some thought. I can use a USB hub too as I have a spare powered unit which may work.
Thanks again Paul. I sincerely appreciate all the help.
Best regards,
David
