Hi, I keep geeting this "System Fan fail" Message, yet the instances are becoming more and more frequent. I have cleaned out the heat sink many times with compressed air yet I feel it's time for a new one due to the fact that it "wiggles" when I touch it.
I removed it on Sunday as I got a blue screen saying a lot of bad things and here are a few pictures from my attempts.

Two of the holding screws have come away from the housing, luckily it is opposing ones and not say "top or bottom" so there is equal pressure.
The reason for this thread? I cannot get ahold of a reasonable answer for a replacement, and HP are dragging their heels on a reply for a part. My machine is a Pavilion Media Centre m7775.uk-a with a Leonite-GL8E Motherboard.
HELP!

Which fan? Do you mean the CPU cooler fan or another fan? If the CPU cooler fan is loose do not start up the PC. You will fry the processor if you do.

I've been told it's called a "Heatsink" and it appears to be over the processor here's a picture of that

Hi,
Well it is actually called a CPU cooler. It is an assemble that has the cooler and a fan attached to it. I suggest that you replace it. That should stop the error that you are getting. It means that the fan is failing. The BIOS is receiving a condition code from the sense wire which is part of the four wire connector attached to the motherboard at the header which says CPU fan.
Download and run CPU-z and post which motherboard is installed in your PC. The photo you linked to shows what appears to be a socket 775 CPU. Verify that for me and I will recommend an upgrade (replacement) CPU cooler. Your PC model indicates your locale is the UK. If that is so then I can link to an online vendor which will have a replacement cooler which will do a better job than the original cooler setup. The link goes to a UK online vendor.
Best regards,
erico

HP said I have a Leonite GL8E motherboard running an E6600 Intel Core2 Duo Processor
Today I have purchased a "Spire" CPU Cooler ISO 14001 Certified
and a Akasa AK 968 Heatsink (Product # "N48HR" at Maplins)
I will open and inspect my MB and whichever work best stays, and the other gets returned
My only problem is that I cannot find Thermal paste cleaner so isopropyl or surgical spirit will have to do.

HI,
Great. Use a high quality TIM like ArctiSilver 5 / ceramique or OCZ Freeze. Either of those for cleaning is fine.
The most recent cooler on my Core2 duo E8400 is an Mugen Scythe II. It probably needs more space than your motherboard will be able to provide.
Best regards,
erico

System Fan means CASE FAN not CPU fan, either you have removed it from the motherboard or there is a problem with it. In the follwing picture just to the left and down from CPU slot is a 4 pin CPU_fan connector and beside it to the right is sys_fan make sure there is a fan connected to that and if so buy a new one the same as that one. I know this b/c on my computer I removed the fan from sys fan and connected it to cpu fan and placed full speed fan on CPU for a temp fix and that is the same error I got when I booted up, so I would say since it comes and goes the fan is not plugged in properly or going bad. It is NOT the CPU fan.

Snipe could very well be right. Might need to check if the latest BIOS address an issue like that. Does your PC have a case fan?

I guarantee that it does have one but as to what is wrong with the fan I don't know (probably bad connection, pull it off and put it back on). I have had to do MUCH research on the fans on HP systems as of late due to issues I had with all my fans running full speed. HP has crap support/service only here on the forums do you get answers. I will NEVER EVER buy an HP product again, my next computer will be CUSTOM, and I will build it my self, since I just canabalized my HP to build a sort of custom system now, MUCH better.
