Sporadic fan failure message on startup. Is this indicative of the need to replace the fan?

Occasionally, when I restart my desktop after having been away for a day or so, I receive a fan failure message.  I immediately turn the computer off. I wait a few minutes and try to restart.  The restart goes smoothly.  Has anyone else had this type of message?  What would I need to verify that fan is failing?  If it is, where can you procure a replacement fan?

Yes, this is indicative of a failing fan. I was getting sporadic "System Fan Failure" messages on my HP a1632x. First I removed all dirt and dust, then decided to put a drop or two of light machine oil on the bearings and "exercise" the fan with compressed air to work the oil in. Two year later and not one repeat of the fan failure message.

Depending on the fan being a system/case fan or CPU fan may impact where you can procure a replacement. Try Newegg.com for starters. Take measurements of the existing fan. Check the BIOS for fan speed in RPMs and buy one that is at least that fast if not 10% faster. Make sure it is a three lead coonector with tachometer.
