Transferring hard drive to new system

I just purchased an HP Envy 700-074. I liked all the specs on this machine, including the addtional hard drive bay.

I wish to transfer a 1TB data drive from my old Dell running Windows 7 x64 to the new system. Are there going to be any problems, or will the HP pick the drive right up?

TIA

Re: Transferring hard drive to new system

Hi Clay,

It all depends as they say.

If the hard drive is SATA and was not in a RAID array or used with bitlocker then you should be OK to use the drive as a data only hard drive.  There might be exceptions as some SATA I hard drives might not work on a SATA III port. In this case, an external USB enclosure might make the drive usable.

Re: Transferring hard drive to new system

It is a SATA drive, but most likely SATA I as it was purchased 4-5  years ago, and my Dell XPS 200 is close to 7 yrs old. Without going into thhe BIOS, I couldn't say for certain.

Re: Transferring hard drive to new system

The drive is a Seagate 1TB @ 3Gps, if that helps.

Re: Transferring hard drive to new system

Installled HD. BIOS saw it with no problems, as did Windows 8.1.

Thanks for your input. You never will know if it will work until you try. Installing HD was a piece of cake once I saw where to place it.
