Trying to upgrade Desktop PSU/GPU need help

It's been years since i have dabbled into any hardware and i am dying to get my desktop ready for Diablo 3.

I have a P6617c Desktop.

I am trying to upgrade the PSU from the 250W to something considerably bigger. A few problems

The dimensions i found on the lite-on site for the PSU says it's  5.9x 3.4x 5.5

I want to install any kind of good PSU but most are 5.9" x 3.4" x 6.3". Now when i measured the depth it was more like the 6.3.

Do you guys think this Power supply and Video card will work with the desktop.

(assuming the graphics card has enough clearance).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as i have been trying to figure out how to do this for a while now.

Thanks

Re: Trying to upgrade Desktop PSU/GPU need help

The EVGA 01G-P3-1460-KR GeForce GTX 560 appears that it should have enough clearance to fit. It has a minimum system power supply requirement of 450 watts. The OCZ power supplies may be a bit big for the HP case. I would suggest the Corsair CX500 or CX600. They are only slightly larger than the stock HP units. Also, they come highly recommended and are forum favorites.

[ Edited ]

Hi,

The NVIDIA 560 that you referenced should fit but measure to be sure.  This video card only needs a good quality 450 watt power supply.

I don't recommend PSUs over 650 watts as there have been PCs would would not boot up.

Try to find a PSU that fits within the HP standard dimensions of 5.5 by 3.4 by 5.9.

The Corsair CX600 or CX500 should work quite well.

These HP 'how-to" articles should be helpful.

Review this posted document for background information.

Re: Trying to upgrade Desktop PSU/GPU need help

Those corsair power supplies look perfect! thanks!

One last concern i had was regarding heat. Since most Hps are uAtx, should i be worried installing this card into this case? Should i try to add another exhaust fan?

Re: Trying to upgrade Desktop PSU/GPU need help

Hi,

The NVIDIA 460 in my HP e9280t mid-case draws more power than the 560 and I don't have heat issues.  The Corsair power supply has a bigger fan so it will help exhaust the heat.

Additional cooling ideas: PCI slot cooling fan and vented PCI slot covers.

Re: Trying to upgrade Desktop PSU/GPU need help

So i have been researching for a while and decided on MSI N460GTX-M2D1GD5/OC2 GeForce GTX 460 Video Card.

If you said that it fit in your hp can bi assume that it wil work in mine? of course i will have to get a new Psu, and i actually plan on getting one that was previous recommended.

But i am worried that it will not fit because of the dual slot? I am hoping that all will fit and i can use it on my new Acer monitor (dvi). Any suggestions will be helpful.

Re: Trying to upgrade Desktop PSU/GPU need help

Hi,

Most PCI-E 2.0 cards are backwards compatible in a PCI-E 1.x slot (with some exceptions).

The PCI-E 2.0 slot a more bandwidth but I very much doubt if you will see any performance difference by using the NVIDIA 460 in a PCI-E 1.x slot.
