I plugged an MP3 player (Sansa Clip) into my USB2 port. It drew power and charged the battery but now I can't use any USB ports.
I have a desktop Presario SR1210NX running Windows XP. In device managerthe USB 's are listed in a group called Unknown. I have tried deleting the USB's and leting them reinstall. I tried replacing the hard disk with one from another computer running XP and the problem seemed to stay with the computer and not the hard disk which led me to think it might be a BIOS problem so I updated the BIOS. No luck. Another strange thing, my cd-rw drive won't record now. I ran the error detect program and the error on the cd-rw said something about SCSI trouble.

I've looked all of those suggestions over and nothing seemed to help. This is a desktop Presario bought in 2004. The USB ports in device manager are listed under a label 'unknown' not the usual 'Universal Serial Bus' if that helps.

Hi
Just try to Uninstall them then restart the unit and check. Then you may also try doing system restore to the date where unit was working fine.

That didn't work. The devices are still not recognized as USB ports. I have reinstalled the software from my disk drive and that didn't help either. It did make a mess though that I needed to clean up.

I tried resetting CMOS. No good. I tried it by just reseting CMOS and then I tried deleting the USB's in device manager and resetting CMOS and neither made a difference. Thanks for giving me the path to my motherboard. I hadn't known that before.

pappy841,
Are you leaving anything USB plugged in? Seen this problem before with cables still attached.
Unplug all USB devices. Delete all USB's in Device Manager. Do a complete Shutdown, not a ReBoot.
Wait unplug Power Cord, and wait several minutes. Then plug in Power cord, and start computer. Let it rebuild the USB drivers.
HP Tech support document on USB:
To say THANK YOU, press the white star on the left, to render a KUDO.
Please click Accept as Solution, just to the right of my reply if your problem is solved.
PS--You can render both Solution and KUDO

That didn't work either. The USB hardware and the root hubs are always detected after I delete them but they show up under the heading "unknown" in device manager. So the computer sees them but doesn't know what to do with them.

Try installing the latest Intel Chipset software for your motherboard to see if it can "remind" the machine what to do with usb ports...longshot but never know![]()
