Updating my Processor on Pavilion m7680y

Currently I have a core 2 duo 2.13ghz processor. I was stoked to think I could overclock it, but according to everyone, i cant overclock custom build PCs from HP or Dell. So I was wondering if its possible to upgrade the processor by buying a new one, like a core 2 duo at 2.6ghz or more.

So can I jsut pop off the old processor and place the new one in? And will it be recognized by my computer and improve my performance? Or do I have to buy an entirely different motherboard? Does this effect the BIOS or will that automatically update when I put in the new processor?

Re: Updating my Processor on Pavilion m7680y

You can update to an Intel Core Duo E6x00 with Dual Core technology (Conroe core)

You would need to install the latest bios update to update the microcode to handle newer processors.

For faster performance you may think about upgrading  the video card, power supply, and add more memory.

Im not sure if you're allowed to, but can you recommend me a processor from newegg?

Also, do I update the BIOS now or after I plug in the new processor?

You would be better off to update the bios before hand. I don't think the conroe or wolfdale will matter.

No. Just remember to let the bios update finish. Do not interupt it. If you do you can ruin the computer.
