Upgrading CPU

I have a HP Pavilion p6523w Desktop PC. I am trying to upgrade my CPU from a AMD Athlon X2 220 to a AMD Phenom II X4 9xx.  and i keep getting an unsupported CPU message when i turn it on. Anyone know how i can fix this?

Try clearing the CMOS.  It's a long shot.

Your PC was spec'd for a 65 watt processor. What is the wattage rating of your new processor? You might need a bigger power supply if you still have the original 250 watt PSU installed. Or, fall back to a 65 watt processor chip.

Make sure you have the latest bios and clear cmos. But I know what most likely has happened. Either it is a bios issue. Which I doubt. Since HP lists the supported processors. Or you got the high wattage version. Which is 125w. They also have a 95w version depending on the processor you picked. So the mobo probably cannot support 125w and only up to 95w. You should also upgrade to a quality psu. Which could be a issue as well. Stock psu's have enough juice to power things up and maybe add like a sound care or something. If you want to add a quality graphics card. You need a new psu anyways.

I forgot to mention in my post that i also upgraded my power supply to a 600 watt. So i can rule that one out. Thanks for the thoughts though.

Since you have a bigger PSU then that would leave the issue of only using a 65 watt processor chip.
