Re: Upgrading GTX 260 on my a6455d pc

Here are the dimensions of a standard ATX PSU:

 5.9"(W) x 3.4"(H) X 5.5"(L); 150mm(W) x 86mm(H) x 140mm(L)

Open your PC's case and measure your power supply's dimensions. That will give you the answer as to whether the PSU you wish to use as an upgrade will fit inside " the ATX designed power supply can fit into the a6455d's chassis".

Re: Upgrading GTX 260 on my a6455d pc

This is what HP told me:

The ATX PSU voltage:

input voltage:

100-127v/8A
200-240V/4A

dimensions

(L)414mm x (W)175mm x (H)387mm
(L)16.3" x (W)6.89" x (H)15.24"

Then they told me again this: (HP Support)

"I would like to inform you that the maximum output wattage is - 250W to 460W, depending on the model, so ATX PSU specifically running at about 600watts for the video card upgrade in this mother board will not be possible as it might damage the motherboard. (There is direct compatibility between the system and the motherboard)

If you need furtherassistance, please reply to this message and we will be happy to assist you further."

Why would it damage the MOBO as it draws power from the power supply? I really need help about this.

Re: Upgrading GTX 260 on my a6455d pc

The HP CEO wants to boost profit by hiring phone monkeys that could type.  Cheap labor = Lousy support.

A basic 12VDC lead-acid in your car can deliver 4000W for a short period of time.  However, I'm not aware of any problem with the on-board electronics!

Basic high-quality 350W PSU capable of putting out 300W continuous @ 12VDC with 40C ambient should do the job.  You can also put a 1000W PSU if you have $ to burn.  Course the PSU's efficiency at low load (40-70W) will suffer with a larger PSU.

Re: Upgrading GTX 260 on my a6455d pc

Per my previous post, a quality 350W will do the job.  I prefer the Corsair 400CX.  Radeon 4770 would be a better card vs the 9800GT given that both are about the same price.

Re: Upgrading GTX 260 on my a6455d pc

I would ignore that particular message from HP support. It is completely self serving and untrue (unless he knows about some faulty components on the motherboard and isn't willing to share that information with you).

Re: Upgrading GTX 260 on my a6455d pc

I checked the specs of the 4770 and its higher than the 9800GT.

Should I get a 4770 or 9800GT?

Well you guys decide on what's better.

tnx.

Re: Upgrading GTX 260 on my a6455d pc

My own preference is ATI HD cards, but be aware that this card is 8.5" long compared to 8" on the 9800. The HD 4770 is also a double slot card which makes it a poor choice for your pc case. It is physically too wide.

Take a look at the Radeon HD series and Nvidia  comparison.

Go to this link , click on the Specs link in the page and save and open the Excel spreadsheet that has all of Sapphire's gfx card products. This way you will be able to compare the physical dimensions easily. The matrix also shows which cards are sigle and double slot wide. On the same spreadsheet  you can also see the physical dimensions of the Nvidia graphics cards as well by selecting the spreadsheet's bottom tabs.

After all, it is your money you are spending. All most of us wish to do is help you make an educated decision.

Re: Upgrading GTX 260 on my a6455d pc

If you're serious about gaming, then migrate the electronics to a better case...Antec 300.  The stock HP case does not vent well.  This may result in system instability during heaving gaming.

Those PCs are designed for light gaming.
