Upgrading HP m7674n processor

I have a M7674N with a Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 (C) DC 2.13 GHz, 1066 MHz front side bus, Socket 775 processor.  I have upgraded the power supply to 700W.  It has 8GB of memory.

I was hoping to purchase an affordable upgrade to a faster processor.

I updated the BIOS to the most recent version on the HP website for this MOBO.  I purchased a Core 2 Duo Processor E6850 LGA775 3 GHz 4MB L2 Cach 1333 MHz FSB Conroe processor based on the HP Motherboard Specifications.  I installed the new processor and all that I got were beeps (no monitor).  The fans all started up and ran.  The old and new processors look identical with regard to the pins.

I replaced the new processor with the old and everything worked great.  I tried again and got the same.  I'm still using the old processor without any problems.  Any idea what's going on?

Hi,

This doesn't sound good.  Trying clearing the CMOS.

I wish HP was more specifc about processor upgrades rather than stating E6x00.

The front side bus speed is different for the E6850.

How many beeps were you getting?

Re: Upgrading HP m7674n processor

DE, here are the Motherboard Specifications for the computer.  It shows that you can replace the CPU with an Intel Core 2 Duo E6x00 with Dual Core technology (Conroe).  However, it doesn't show a E6850.  There simply may be too much difference in the two models to work properly.

Didn't count the beeps.  Would have to reinstall to count.  I may try resetting the C<OS and counting the beeps next weekend.
