Upgrading a Pavilion p6510f with a new power supply, Graphics card, and RAM will they work?

[ Edited ]

All right here's the deal I'm going back to Japan for around 3 months and during that time I will be borrowing my Cousins Laptop (in exchange for my desktop) to skype etc. No problems their the thing is he happens to be a gamer and this p6510f has some bad specs when it comes to that so I thought I could let him borrow some cake rather than dirt, if you catch my drift ha.. Plus, when I return gamer shall I be~ ("Yoda Voice" aka The way the Japanese language works...)

So I looked on Newegg / Amazon read reviews and planned my buy but the question is can this Case and Board handle what I'm going to use? to lazy to measure everything out / busy.

So first the thing I'd like to replace:

Replacing the default 2x 2GB ram cards with:

4x  Corsair Vengeance Blue 4 GB (2X4 GB) PC3-12800 1600mHz DDR3 240-Pin SDRAM

For a 16GB ram total with my 64x bit PC of course

Link: http://amzn.to/KtMt9m (note i'm purchasing two)

Replacing the 250w power supply with a rather overkill one but it's the same price as a 550w so why not eh? After all future upgrade/ability to use it in future builds?

1x Corsair Enthusiast Series 650-Watt 80 Plus Bronze Certified Power Supply Compatible with Intel Core i3, i5, i7 and AMD platforms

For the graphics card + overclocking.

Finally No more ATI integrated BS... Please for the love of the creator (will this work?)

1x EVGA GeForce GTX 580 1536 MB GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 2DVI/Mini-HDMI SLI

If my PC can fit this card and have it work with the above power supply that will make me happy enough. (As for cooling if it becomes a problem I can upgrade the fans myself but first comes this hardware.)

I myself have checked the Graphics card slot, RAM, and power supply area and it seems to me this will work out I just want a professional opinion...

Re: Upgrading a Pavilion p6510f with a new power supply, Graphics card, and RAM will they work?

Here are the specs for your HP Pavilion p6510f Desktop Computer. According to the the specs;

Memory:

Supported speeds
PC3-10600 @ 1333 MHz*
PC3-8500 @ 1066 MHz
*DDR3-1333 modules run at 1066 MHz if three or more modules are installed.

The memory might be an issue. The Corsair TX650 may be a little tight in the case. The Corsair CX600 will be a easier fit. At 10.5 inches EVGA 580 may be a little long. Please measure along the PCIe x16 slot for clearance. See Big_Dave's Guide for Selecting a Discrete Video Card for more information.

Thanks for the quick reply what would you say then about this RAM? its 1333 PC3

My last main question is will the RAM work?

As for the corsair 600w then I think the 650w will fit just checked and I'm alright for room.

Lastly I'm just going to go with a GTX680 for graphics half an inch shorter and more up to date.

Thanks for the heads up!

Hi,

The NVIDIA 580 is being discontinued.  Look at the NVIDIA 680. It's a shorter card and takes less power.  See these specs.

BTW, according to the EVGA site you can only buy 4 per household.

Re: Upgrading a Pavilion p6510f with a new power supply, Graphics card, and RAM will they work?

Hi,

According to Corsair, the dimms that you have chosen have only been tested at 1600mhz which is not within the specifications posted by HP.

You can roll the dice on the dimms that you picked but I wouldn't recommend that you buy them until you contact Corsair and get confirmation.  HP PCs can be very finicky with dimms, particularly if you try to mix them with other dimms.  If you do buy these dimms and plan to intermix them with the existing dimms then make sure that the CAS latency timings match up per HP's posted information. Also mixing dimms sizes will cause the memory to run in unbalanced mode which is detrimental to memory performance.

You should be able to make your own decision on whether to roll the dice or not.

All right that answers my question I'll buy a set and if they don't work I'll just return them.

Thanks for the help!

Re: Upgrading a Pavilion p6510f with a new power supply, Graphics card, and RAM will they work?

For some reason I am unable to CREATE a new posting. It says I'm not authorized.  However, I need help along the same lines.  I own a HP P6510f computer.  It originally had an AMD Athlon X4 630 processor in it.  However, I purchased a Phenom X4 965 Black Edition.  However, when I used CPU-Z, it says that the core speed is only 798.01 mhz.  But, all of my other friends have core speeds that are like 3 times that speed.  They stated that I needed to overclock it in the bios.  However, when I press F10, I notice that the option to change the CPU or speed is greyed out.  Is the HP motherboard not equipped for overclocking?  Do I have to purchased a different motherboard?

I cleared the CMOS three times.  Each time I did it, I would reboot the system and for about 10/20 seconds CPU-Z would say that my core speed was 3600.00 mhz.  But, then it would go back to the 798.01 mhz 30 seconds later.

Upgrading a Pavilion p6510f with a new power supply, Graphics card, and RAM will they work?

Hello Videomanfx,

HP like other manufacturers limit what the end user can do within the BIOS. You will have access to limited options.

Upgrading your motherboard is an option, however doing so would also require you obtaining another copy of Windows. The version that is on your computer now is licensed to run on that machine with that setup.

Hello videomanfx,

Run CPU-Z in a separate window then put your PC under a CPU stress load. Observe the clock rate in CPU-Z.

BIOS update 6.09 is available for your PC with Windows 7.  You might consider installing it.
