What kind of internal hard drive can I use on my HP Pavilion Elite e9150t PC?

I'm planning to get an additional hard drive for my HP Pavilion Elite e9150t PC.  I think the SATA connectors on the MOB is SATA 2.

What kind of drive can I use without using any adapter? IDE, SATA 1, SATA 3, SAS, SSD, iSCSI? Most likely, I will get a SATA drive but not sure whether mine can use SATA 1 and SATA 3.

HP Pavilion Elite e9150t PC
•  Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-920 processor (2.66GHz, 1MB L2 + 8MB shared L3 cache with QPI Technology)
• 6GB DDR3-1066MHz SDRAM [3 DIMMs]
• 640GB 7200 rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drive
• 1GB ATI Radeon HD 4650 [DVI, HDMI, VGA]
• LightScribe 16X max. DVD+/-R/RW SuperMulti drive
• Wireless-N LAN card
• 15-in-1 memory card reader, 1 USB, 1394, audio
• No TV Tuner w/remote control
• Integrated 7.1 channel sound with front audio ports
• HP 2.1 30W stereo speakers with subwoofer and remote control
• HP multimedia keyboard and HP optical mouse

Re: What kind of internal hard drive can I use on my HP Pavilion Elite e9150t PC?

Hi Peter,

You will want to use a sata II hard drive. A SSD or hard drive with a sata III inferface will also work.  I have the same motherboard in my PC (e9280t) as your e9150t has in it.

I have tried a SSD with a sata III interface and it works quite well. However, SSDs are a little expensive. Another possible alternative would be a sata III drive with a 64 MB cache such as this Western Digital.

Re: What kind of internal hard drive can I use on my HP Pavilion Elite e9150t PC?

Hi Big_Dave,

Thanks for the post.  Since I'm not setting up RAID, I'm thinking to get a larger drive like this but I need to understand more about the effect of cache and RPM.  I need to find out the cache size of my drive.  This machine will be set up as a virtual server using Windows Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V for testing purpose and the main application to be installed in each VM will be SQL Server.

Hi Peter,

A bigger cache is better than a smaller cache as the chance of getting a "hit" or "find" with the data being available in cache is much improved.  This save on rotation delay time and access time (mechanical movement of the r/w arm).

A smart disk controller will detect a sequential data access sequence and will start prestaging data.

The worst case scenario for minimizing the effectiveness of cache is random data base writes. However, having cache in this scenario is still better overall compared to not having any cache.

The best scenario for a large cache is repeated read access to commonly referenced data.

I use Hitachi 2.5" hard drives and I have made note of your reference the sata III model.

Re: What kind of internal hard drive can I use on my HP Pavilion Elite e9150t PC?

Hi Dave,

The Hitachi drive I linked was on sale for $70 few days ago.  I find this one for $108 shipped.  I will check out 2.5" drive since it is supposed to be faster than 3.5" drive.

My understanding is that since the MOB has SATA II connectors (I assume they are since the drive came with the machine is SATA II),  the transfer rate will still be SATA II even a SATA III drive is connected.

Since the main purpose for this machine is for testing features not performance in different OS and SQL Server, disk size will be the most important factor so I can have more VMs.

peter,

The Hitachi 2.5" hard drives that I am using are not as fast as my 3.5" Western Digital hard drives.
