My HP dc7700 Mini tower with Windows 7 Professional starts in the morning with a whirring sound as if there in a disk spinning in the DVD drive. After a short time, it quiets for the remainder of the day. I have opened the case and after blowing out all dust from fans and CPU cooling tower, the noise was reduced. The case was very clean.
I do not think it is a HD problem. If it is a fan problem, I cannot locate it. All fans seem to be performing well.

Do you have any suggestions?

Fmwar, welcome to the forum.
I wish that I could tell you what is causing this sound, because I have heard the same sound in my custom-built gaming computer for over two years. I, too, in the beginning believed that it was the hard drive. I have listened at boot with the side panel off and still can't pinpoint the culprit. It only lasts for 3 to 10 seconds at most, ending with an upward sound. It has not caused me any problems, however. Maybe one of the other members will be able to help both of us.

I would think I would hear some clicking sound if it was the HD. that is why I suspected a fan. Time will tell.
