WiFi adapter on desktop machine [ Edited ]

Can I add wifi to a G5206uk desktop runing Windows 7 64 bit using Belkin's f6d4050 usb adapter?

I have loaded the driver that came with the adpater, tried again by downloading from the Belkin site, and even just let Windows try to sort it out, but I always get a message saying that there is a problem with the driver.

Is this a harware incompatibility?

Hi:

I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to.  That model is supported for Windows 7 64 bit.

Everyone has their preferences. I prefer top-tier products from Linksys (Cisco) and Netgear.  They actually have a warranty that is worth something.

Thanks Erico. Sorry that I have misunderstood the purpose of this forum. I thought it was to provide assistance, but it is obviously intended as a vehicle for criticising my judgment in purchasing Belkin products.

No. That is not so at all. It was certainly not my intent. You will note that I prefaced my statement that everyone has their own preferences. Everyone is also entitled to their own opinion.

I also do not assume that you work in IT. Another member recommended the brand to you.

I still do suggest that you consider other than Belkin and Eminent and others. I just prefer to go with quality over low price for very good reasons.

Hi:

How did you attempt to install the adapter?

Normally you have to load the software and driver disk first and then plug in the adapter. The disk usually prompts you through the process.

I personally do not like to install the wireless card manufacturer's wireless software and prefer to let Windows manage may wireless connections. You can normally do this by just installing the drivers.

Here is what I would try:

Either in the file you downloaded, or on your installation and driver disk, explore the contents and you should see some folders. In one of those folders is the 64 bit driver for the device.  If there are no folder visible or when you launch the program you don't see any folders created, see if you can extract the components of the setup file, using a free utility like WINRAR.

If you can locate where the 64 bit driver is located (the file extension will be a .inf). You can then go into your device manager, click on your problem network adapter, click on update driver, browse to the folder where you found the driver and install it that way.

Try the driver only download instead, Install the driver in Device Manager and let Windows zero config manage the wireless. YOu might have to go into Services and set it to automatic.

I tried extracting the driver from the software package and was not successful. WinRaR was not helpful in this case.

Thanks to both of you for the suggestions. I have tried them all but I still end up with the same problem.

The driver loads and shows without an exclamation mark in Device manager. The USB adapter appears to be recoginsed - the light comes on, and the system expects me to 'stop' it before removal - but it does not find the router. When I run the troubleshooter it gives the informative statement that 'the wirleless network adapter is experiencing problems'.

I think I am going to park this for now and come back to it later. Thanks again for your assistance.
