Will 6 GB/s hard drive work on 3 GB/s port of motherboard?

Hi-

I have HP Compaq DC7700 Convertible Minitower desktop for home use.
http://h20565.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/kb/docDisplay/?sp4ts.oid=3232028&spf...

I would like to repalce the HDD (Seagate 160 GB, SATA 3GB/s) as its giving problems.

1). Do you think any SSD hard disk will work with the above motherboard?

2). If not, will SATA '6GB/s' Hard drive compatible with 3GB/s port of the above motherboard?

3). Are these SATA2 & SATA3 hard drives having same kind of power socket?

Hi:

You may run into a problem if you install a non HP SATA III drive of any kind like I did with my dc7800.

My PC had the first issue listed on the support document at the link below (even though the dc7800 was not amongst the list of PC's).

http://h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/kb/docDisplay/?javax.portlet.begCach...

I had purchased a WD Caviar Black 500 GB SATA III HDD and anytime I would restart the PC or several times from a cold boot, I would get a hard drive not found error.

Of course, I assumed it was a defective drive and returned it for a replacement.  The replacement drive did the same thing.

I have an HP 8200 Elite CMT with a Seagate 1 TB SATA III hard drive.  I put that drive in my dc7800 and it has worked perfectly for the last two years, which confirmed to me that the support document affects more than the models listed there.

My recommendation to you would be to get the equivalent Seagate HDD that was in my Elite 8200, which is this one Or stick with a sata II drive if you can find one.

Re: Will 6 GB/s hard drive work on 3 GB/s port of motherboard?

SATA2 and SATA3 ports and drives are forward / backwards compatible.

1)  A SSD should work in your computer.

2)  A SATA3 drive should work with SATA2 ports.

3)  YES
