Over the past couple of weeks I have been having problems with USB devices on my e9140f. These problems all started when the IR blaster for my Hauppage 1290 TV tuner stopped functioning. I have been troubleshooting since then and the problem still persists.
Symptoms (all are intermittent but more failures than successes)
- connectivity / detection of my 500GB Personal Media drive
- unable to read media cards (SD and Sony) inserted in the card reader
- unable to successfully sync iPods (touch and 3rd gen Nano (media stored on the media drive)
- unable to do backups (again, backing up to media drive)
Other info
- Windows 7 64 bit home version
- There are no errors showing in Device Manager
- I have tried the recommended Microsoft Hotfix
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976972
but get an error message that it is "not appropriate for my computer"
- I have invoked a previous restore point that I believe was taken before the problems started (not 100% certain.
- I have disconnected all USB devices (printer, webcam) except for the mouse and keyboard.
- I have uninstalled devices in device manager, disconnected the USB headers on the Hauppuage to IR extension board, rebooted, powered down then reconnected and rebooted in an attempt to get the IR blaster working.
As above, however, the problem now seems to be a generalized USB issue, so this partial fix didn't help. I'm at my wits end as not only does my computer not work properly, I have now messed up my wife's iPod touch through a failed Sync. Yikes!
Any help to get things back on track greatly appreciated.

When you disconnected all USB devices except the mouse and keyboard, if you didn't power down, press and hold the power button for 5 seconds and them reboot - give it a try.
Here's a trouble shooting USB connections document, it's for Vista but should be the same for Windows 7.
Here's a USB update for your computer.
If you're not sure about the restore point you could go back even further.
You might try to do a repair in System Recovery or a complete System Recovery.
If the problem still persist I would start suspecting either a faulty power supply or a motherboard issue as possibilities.

The patch does apply to your system. You probably downloaded the 32-bit patch (default) rather than the 64-bit version.
You can get the patch here (this version will figure out which version to install and install the appropriate one).

Hello!
I have the similar problem with HP Pavillion Elite m9567it.
Originally my computer shipped with Windows Vista 64 bit edition.
I have made a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit) from Technet as I have an active Technet subscription and installed. After installation I've connected my external USB hard drives and there was no problem. Some days later Windows 7 downloaded and installed updates (maybe this is a reason, I don't know) and then I couldn't any more connect USB hard drives. All other USB devices (except my Canon MP450 Series Printer) didn't work. I have no more access to all-in-one card reader, I can't use USB harddrives, I can't connect my cell phone, etc. Everytime it says that Windows is installing a required software and eventually fails to install it. Is there any USB patch for my model?
I have the following in the system information:
Bulk-In, Bulk-Out, Interface USB\VID_0BDA&PID_0152&MI_00\6&2182AFBE&4&0000 The drivers for this device are not installed.

Zaur,
Try running the Intel Chip Set update. W7 should have taken care of that issue. Unplug your USB devices when running the update.
