I have a HP Z400 workstation (KK595ET#ABU). I'm trying to use insert an internal backup (not to install the operating system on it) HDD of 4TB but it only sees (offers to initialise) 1.6TB. This seems to be showing only the amount over 2TB i.e. I should see 3.6TB. It makes no difference if I select MBR or GPT.

The Bios - 786G3 v01.17
The operating system - Windows 7 Ultimate N 64 bit service pack 1
HDD - Western Digital WD SE WD4000F9YZ - Hard drive - 4 TB - internal - 3.5" - SATA-600 - 7200 rpm

Can anyone please tell me what I need to do to get it to see the full capacity?

Is there a specific SATA port I need to plug the HDD into if it is over 2TB or does the hardware just not support it?

Thank you for any help.

Hi,

The following shows you how to initilize/initialise the HDD before you can use (full screen shots too):

Thank you BH, that's a great explanation, but I don't see the option in Disk Management to alter the cluster size or other settings mentioned. It just gives me the option to initialiser the disk at 1678.02GB.

Do you know if the Z400 has the ability to support larger than 2TB drives?

Thanks again BH.  That article has given me a few avenues to try.  It's much better than the one I was directed to from a Google search.

Thank you BH. I downloaded Intel RST exe from the Intel site, installed it, restarted Windows and disk manager saw the full capacity.

An extremely simple solution in the end. It's a pity the guy on the Western Digital support desk I phoned didn't tell me it when I phoned weeks ago. He advised me to return the disk to where I had bought it. Thank you for the help.

Help.. I am having a  similar issue.  I mounted the WD Black 4TB and it only read 1.7TB and I would like the full capacity.  Which RST do I need for HPZ400 Workstation?
