beeps on (non) startup

I hope someone can help me.

I have a compaq presario sr1719uk desktop pc, about 3 or 4 years old.

apparently this has a msi 7184 motherboard and athlon 64 34004 processor, running windows xp home edition.

This is not my main machine so may go 3 or 4 weeks without use, however i keep all my music, family photos, important documents etc on it. i have had a few blue screen errors over the last few months but all seemed fine on restart.

However when i turned machine on this morning monitor showed no signal.  I've checked all connections and all seem ok.

The fan is running and the light on the dvd drive comes on, however the machine beeps once almost immediately i turn it on and then continues beeping without actually starting.

The beep pattern is 1 single beep lasting about 1 second then a 2 second pause 1 beep 2 second pause 1 beep etc etc.

i'm not very computer literate but i've read that these beeps give a clue as to what the problem is.

if anyone can help i would be very grateful

thanks i advance

Re: beeps on (non) startup

Hi jonsiduk,

The beeping is likely due to bad memory or maybe the memory is just not seated properly in the PC. Try opening the PC to see if there is any issue with the memory.

Here are few HP Support documents to use as a reference:

BIOS Beep Codes

Upgrading Memory (RAM)

Let us know how it goes.
