computer not reading 2 gig RAM

I just installed a new stick of DDR2 5300 667mhz 2GB RAM and my computer isn't reading it.  My previous amount of ram was 1407MB (1) 1GB and (1) 512MB.  I installed it and my BIOS clearly reads the 2 gig but whenever I log on and go into my task manager or just "My Computer" the readout is still 1407MB.  and at the same time my Windows Experience rating increased which gives a notion that it has all/almost 3GB in there.  Can someone explain and/or help?

SD, it would help if we knew the make/model of your computer.  Once we know the model of your computer, we will be able to give you better answers.

Re: computer not reading 2 gig RAM

SD, the link that you provided is for a SR5313WM computer.  If this is correct, then, here is a link to "Crucial Memory's" website giving you the information for it:

http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Presario%20SR5313WM

You definitely can add 2GB sticks to each slot.  So, this should not be a problem.  I would suggest installing one of these programs to see what they say:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Info/AIDA.shtml

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

If they say that you have the 3GB of memory, you can be assured that you do.  Why it isn't being reported by your system is the mystery.  Let us know what these programs report.

Re: computer not reading 2 gig RAM

[ Edited ]

it states that:

 ----------------------------------------------

1408MB of installed memory

Slot 'A0' has 2048 MB

Slot 'A1' has 1024 MB

 ----------------------------------------------

so it shows the 2 and the 1Gig sticks but still is only reading 1408 installed.

??

Re: computer not reading 2 gig RAM

Mixing memory sizes almost never works well. The chips, bank sizes and on the memory modules need to be identical for a successful memory upgrade. Install identical DDR sicks and your problem should go away.
