cpu fan failed

HP Pavilion 515n Model DF237A, Windows XP Home,

When booted the following message appears "CPU Fan failed. Have system serviced immediately.:  If F2 is pressed, the message is repeated. If F2 is pressed again, the system boots normally.

This system has a passive fin-type CPU cooler.  It does not have a fan.  There are two fans - one for the case and one for the power supply encased in a hood.  I have checked the BIOS Update.  The latest BIOS is 3.24 dated 2003-10-20.  I did not apply the BIOS update.

The fans are working and the temperature is normal.

What produces this error message and what can I do to correct it?

Re: cpu fan failed

Look at the fan connections on your mother board. See if one says cpu fan. Make sure all fans are working. Did you move a fan connection recently?

Re: cpu fan failed

[ Edited ]

Earl,

I like a good mystery.         The 515n is a DC471A.      The 505w is the DF237A.

Are you the original owner of this unit?

Wish I could see a picture of the opened case. I have seen a fan duct/shroud then enveloped the rear case fan, and ended just above the CPU cooler. See picture of case fan duct, step 3 figure 2: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=130&prodSeriesId=...

Never seen a duct/shroud on the PSU.

Re: cpu fan failed

I believe WB2001 are thinking that someone may have removed the fan for repair or replacement. Do you see an impression on the top of the fan that looks like something was screwed into the fins or a circle of  discoloration where a fan may have been?

Re: cpu fan failed

Danjen,

Did you look at the link?

Those units typically has a rear case fan with a unique duct that draws heat off the CPU chip.

All the link shows is how it would have snapped into place on the case fan. There are NO screws.

On the original config, a shroud (square)  snapped into the rear of the case. It fully enclosed the case fan. You pressed the detents to release the extension duct.

Re: cpu fan failed

Yes, it does show the shroud first but then just under that I saw the fan on the heatsink being demonstrated. Sorry, I guess I will have to look up that model better.  I did try to search for a manual but none of them showed the inside for me. The point is that the fan sensor is bad of the fan is missing no matter how it is attached, correct?
