Re: external hard drive

How old is the Laptop?

Unlike flash drives and mice, external hard drives require POWER, which they suck from the USB port. Older USB ports won't supply enough power to spin up the drive.

Judging from the fact that the laptop has Vista, my bet is that you will be fine. Plug in the drive and put stuff on it. When was the last time you backed up your documents on the computer?   :smileyhappy:

As for iTunes; yup. I run my library off of an external drive as well. actual "itunes music library.xlml" and "itunes library.itl" files need to sit in the My documents\music\itunes folder, but the actual music can be set to sit anywhere; including network or external drives.  There is an option in iTunes to change the music location.

There is ONE catch. iTunes doesn't want the music folder to move around. If your external drive is "E" all the time; great. But if you plug in different external drives or USB keys, the external drive might end up getting reassigned a different drive letter, like "F". That would confuse iTunes (and most other programs as well). You occassionally will need to change the assigned drive letter using the "disk management" tool. On XP, the disk management tool is under "computer management" console, under the administrative tools in the start menu.

Re: external hard drive

That's correct ,,,,, ( about the I Tunes) you can save the music anywhere but just make sure that once you do save the I Tunes library you will not move it ,,,, if not you will need to reset the library again ,,,,,,,, remember I tunes do Sync with library in order to check volume and other properties from the music files ,,,,,,,,, ( I keep learning more and more just reading ) .........
Always learning ,,,,, is never too late ,,,,,,,,,

Re: external hard drive

You didn't say what model PC you have but there are also eSata and Firewire external drives. USB is probably the most common and best choice in your case. If the drive needs more power than USB can supply it will come with its' own power supply or you can always add a cheap USB hub with its' own power source.

Re: external hard drive

I did connect and external hard drive with both types of connections (USB / Fire Wire) and I Tunes library will act the same way ( you need to SYNC library again ) if you do change the position of the music or the name of the file where the music is saved ....... I am not trying to send a commercial but i believe that Ultra External Hard Drives are pretty good and some of them will come with their own fans and power ( is my opinion after using them ) ,,, i hope is accepted my comments.
