how to properly install memory in a HP Pavillion A1314N and get operational

i can not get my (4) 1g memory cards operational in a hp pavillion a1314n.All 4 are same manufacture and size. I did install all 4 at once and now i recieve memory dumping error(blue screen). I believe it is a 32 bit system running windows XP Media Edition and I will only get 3.3G of memory use. The system was operating fine with factory ram. What am I doing wrong?

Re: how to properly install memory in a HP Pavillion A1314N and get operational

Jeff, welcome to the forum.

Some motherboards are extremely picky when it comes to memory.  I am only able to use 2GB in my DFI LanParty mobo.  Any more makes it do some crazy things.

Here is the memory that is supported by HP:

  • Dual-channel memory architecture
  • 4 x 184-pin DDR DIMM sockets support unbuffered non-ECC 4 GB 400/300 MHZ DDR memory modules
  • Maximum HP/Compaq approved memory is 4 GB*

It is important to assure the memory that you bought is correct.  As you can see, HP only supports limited specifications.  It has to be DDR; not DDR2 or 3.

You are correct that the OS is 32-bit and will only recognize 3.3GB.

Hi Jeff,

Actually, 3.3 GB out of 4 GB is about the best that you are going to see with a 32 bit operating system.

Try clearing the CMOS and see if that cleans up the errors.

If you are still getting errors, then run the below memory diagnostic.

Try this bootable memory diagnostic CD. Download memtest86 iso file and burn it to disk using Imgburn.

If you get memory errors, then remove all the dimms but one and test them one at a time.

Jeff, definitely try Dave's solution.  If the CMOS has incorrect settings it will cause errors.

All memory chips are not created equal.  The one spec not mentioned is the memory timings.  This could be a problem, also.

I suggest using www.crucial.com to buy memory.  Any memory recommended is guaranteed to work or they will replace it without additional cost to you.  Their prices are as good or better than any e-tailer.  HP used their memory at one time.  I don't know if this is the case today.
