I have a HP Pavilion Elite HPE I bought a year ago in May. 2 months ago, the DVD portion of the CdRom quit working. I can put any music cd I want into the drive, but it will not read any movie discs. I keep getting the 'insert disc into drive' command. I know it is still under warrenty with Best Buy but I do not want to be without my computer for over a month while they fix it. Is there a support file I can download to see if it will fix it, or am I stuck without my computer for the next month?

First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
Check if the drive is now reads DVDs.
If it still doesn't, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'. In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager. Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives. Right click the drive and select uninstall. Do not delete drivers if asked. When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ). Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now reads DVDs.

I think I will just have to do without my computer. I tried both the sfc /scannow and the automated fixit. The scannow could not come up with a problem and still did not work after I uninstalled and reinstalled the device. And the automated fixit was a bust too.
But thanks for getting back to me so fast.
