According to the w22 product specs, your monitor has a DVI-D connector. So you should simply use an HDMI to DVI-D (or I) cable or use an adapter if you already have a DVI-D cable.
So... the adapter you need looks like the one on the left

You can't use VGA to DVI-D as it does not have the analog pins to support the RGB signal.
There's another thing you should be concerned about. This older monitor might not support HDCP... which means that you may get content protection messages when you try to play BluRay (or HD-DVD) movies at higher resolutions - if you go that route.

The specs are wrong because the DVI (female) is definatly not a dvi-d coming out of the monitor. However the front of the adapter (at far left in your pic) is correct except I need a MALE dvi version of that adapter into a cord into an hdmi for the back of my computer. The cord that I have now is DVI-D to HDMI Dinex cord, which will not fit into the old DVI in the back of my monitor. Is there such a cord as I mentioned and will it work w/ my new system? Whew, Is it even worth all of this acronym-izing
or am I out of luck? OKAY, here is my questions that I need answered:
Is there a cord that is an(old) DVI male into an HDMI? or,
an adapter from (old) DVI male to (new) DVI-D female, or
an adapter from (old) DVI male to HDMI for the back of my hp w22 monitor?
If so, are the two hp products compatible together to utilize the nvidia graphics cards to the best quality?
Or is it a long shot to even pursue this acronym hell project?
2 week old hp pavilion elite e9290f to my older: hp w22 monitor - compatible or not?

Why not just use DVI? When it comes to video DVI and HDMI are very similar. Plus you would not need to use an adaptor which is always a weak link.
Your PC has DVI-I output and the monitor had DVI-D input, so a DVD-D cable is what is needed.
Cheers,

l also picked up the e9290f with nvidia gtx 260 card. It came with a dvi to hdmi adapter.
I found I can use the dvi connector or the hdmi connector to hook up to the hp m2509 monitor without issue.
