a system fan (case fan) or a CPU fan?

 

The BIOS will warn about a CPU fan failure, but not about a case fan failure.

 

Only the CPU fan is a critical item for most manufactured OEM PC's.

 

If the CPU fan fails completely then the CPU will overheat and fail. That means your PC will stop working and require repair/replacement if you do not replace the fan.
