I have a HP pavillion media center PC m8020n. From looking at my product specs I purchased some more ram= KVR800D2K2/1GR is the modle # on the ram I purchased. I did purchase this ram from ebay and after giving mother board model said it was compatiable. I tried installing this myself. Computer would not boot. Recieved 1 short beep 1 long beep. Put the factory back in the original slots and it came back up fine. Am I missing something like compatibility or something.

Sounds like incompatible memory. Your original is PC2-4200 and the new memory is PC2-6400:
Motherboard specs state support for PC2 3200 (400 MHz), PC 4200 (533 MHz) and PC2 5300 (667 MHz) DDR2:
