m9300t Vista w/ cablecard BIOS - Is it safe to perform a BIOS UPDATE.

I have a m9300t which is cablecard ready and it is my understanding that there is a special BIOS on it to enable DRM and the ATI external tuner w/ cablecard.

QUESTION: There is  a BIOS update released by HP in early DEC/2008... just one version, I have not seen any "cable ready" update...

Would it be safe for me to perform the BIOS update without loosing the cable reception I enjoy today?

I am affraid the new BIOS would overwrite the special BIOS pre-loaded at HP during manufacturing.

If that is the case, HP would need to release two versions of each BIOS update: one normal version and one "cable ready" version, at least for the owners of already "cable ready" purchased computers.

Thanks.

It's one of those if it's not broke don't fix it issues for me.Updating the bios will not hurt the setup you have now or remove anything that's already setup/installed.It will not set the bios back.If your not having issues I don't see any reason to do so.These are the the updated fixes:

  • Updates Hardware Diagnostic Tools to v4880.05
  • Resolves issue with the system hanging when 7GB of RAM is installed.
  • Improves support for newer processors.
  • Resolves issue with the system appearing to hang during restart if an HP Personal Media Drive is connected.

Interesting... I have done the update and I still was able to use my ATI external digital cable card... and when I press CTRL+ALT+DEL, start task manager and select the performance tab I can see all 4 cores...

The only difference for me is that after power on the HP blue screen does not show up anymore, just the black screen with the devices... and YES, I had set up test off in the BIOS...
