p6727c Fan Speed High

I just got a refurbished p6727c.  The CPU fan seems to run full speed (3040rpm according to SpeedFan) all of the time, even under low CPU loads.  I checked for BIOS updates but didn't see any listed.

Is this normal?

Hi:

I would say that is not normal. Does your BIOS setting have an option to change the fan's idle speed?

Some PC's do (mine do), and I can't find any info on your BIOS settings to let you know if there is or not.

I see no options in the BIOS relating to fan speed.

Re: p6727c Fan Speed High

Hi:

Then something isn't right.

Check your running processes and see if there is something (program or process) putting a load on your CPU.

Found in your system tools folder>resource monitor application.

Re: p6727c Fan Speed High

What is the BIOS revision on the motherboard??? HP seems to run the fans on HIGH with many of their current BIOS releases... This board's current release states "Improves system thermal performance and Updates fan curve for processor support."

The Violet series of boards appear to have this kind of problem also.

Re: p6727c Fan Speed High

Hi,

My average CPU load is around 5-10%, due to Crashplan running background file sync.  Nothing worth pegging the fan over.

Re: p6727c Fan Speed High

Right, but the BIOS may be causing the issue. That is, HP may have got crazy with the logic that controls the fan speed.

Re: p6727c Fan Speed High

The boad bios revision is 6.04, 9/7/2010 (that's pretty old).  However, I can't find an update for this board.

Re: p6727c Fan Speed High

My bad, the search engine picked up the wrong computer model. I do, however stand by the statement that HP has some issues regarding control of the fan speed on some boards. I have/had a p6130y with the Violet m/b and after flashing the BIOS it roared like a jet engine... luckily I tried to flash it back and bricked it. Now I don't have to listen to it anymore.

I just got a p7-1026 that has the same m/b as yours and will check it's operating condition and BIOS revision when I return home on Sunday.

Re: p6727c Fan Speed High

My p7-1026 has a N-Alvorix-RS880-uATX (Alvorix) motherboard with BIOS rev. 6.07 dated 5/4/2011 and doesn't exhibit any fan speed issues.
