By "randomly shuts down" does it just shut off or BSOD?

I don't know what bsod means. It shuts down as in all power off, lights out and won't power on again for awhile and must be unplugged

BSOD means Blue Screen of Death - a Windows fault due to various things. So does it blue screen before it shuts down? Or just shut off with no apparent tell tale signs or any messages?

No bsod, no messages, just power off. My god this is the most frustrating process to try and solve a problem.

With no apparent reason for the shut down, it will prove to be frustrating. When it does this, check the troubleshooting guide for power supplies: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docnam
Go through the steps to verify that the power supply is not the issue.

Thank you for your suggestions - I appreciate your help. I have already looked at the steps to evaluate the power supply. My problem is: when it shuts down it is unresponsive - no lights nothing. But if left unplugged for awhile and powered up again, the lights will come on. Which steps do I follow? lights on or not on? There doesn't seem to be a set of steps to follow if it powers up and boots up but then shuts itself down?

After the shut down is when the steps will be meaningful. First observe if the Power Supply green light is on or off after the shut down. From the description "when it shuts down it is unresponsive - no lights nothing." also means that the green light is out, then follow that path of troubleshooting.

Followed all the steps - still dead. I guess the power supply needs fixing or replacement.
The thing that really irritates me about this, is this happened within days of my 90 day warranty running out. (I bought the refurbished computer at Christmas) Best Buy will take no responsibiity - claiming it is HP's product. Trying to contact HP on their customer support line is a joke! Would there be someone in Canada where I could plead my case that considering the timing and circumstances, Hp might cover the cost of a new power supply if I pay for the labour?

Being that is was a "refurbished", I doubt that HP will do anything. That is one reason to get a less price than original, as they will no longer give free support.
