HP Pavilion d4990y, Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit

tried two different sets of analog speakers, no help

Realtek HighDefinition Audio shows in Device Manager

disabled and enabled this device a number of times, no help

Checked the BIOS, said Auto at first and changed to Enable and went back and forth, presently set to Enable

Never was Disable, no help

fell  back to previous drivers, no help

downloaded and installed latest driver from Realtek, installation went OK, no help

Speakers plugged into green position on back panel

Services: Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder were always started, stopped and restarted these services,

no help

rebooted more times than I can remember

was working fine and then moved the hardware system across the room, unplugged and replugged all devices and problem

appeared

rest of system is working OK

Re: says speakers unplugged but they are definitely plugged in, no sound output

Hi,

One thing you can try, if you haven't already, is plugging the speakers (that you know are working) into the front headphone port and see if you have any sound from there. If you do, then I think given the message you're receiving that you have a broken connection somewhere in the audio jack on the back.

If that's the case and given the age of the computer, you might consider looking for a sound card to install. I've seen 5.1 cards on Amazon for less than $30.

Thanks,

Scott

Thank you, Scott, for the prompt reply.

I tried the front port and it says it is not plugged in either.

I'll go buy another sound card.
