upgraded the cpu but device driver still shows old processor

I have a brand new HP Pavilion P6120T pc. It came with a dual core E5200 cpu.

Resently I ordered an Intell E6300 cpu for a Dell computer but, found out that it wouldn't work in that computer, so I replaced the cpu of my new HP with it.

yes, it works fine but... The device driver shows the old e5200 processor instead of the new E6300 processor.

The start up screen and bios show the newer E6300 as does any test I run on the computer.

I am afraid to uninstall the processor on the device manager.

Any tips what to do? Something or nothing?

Mrjstak, I would clear the CMOS (prn. see moss).  This is the chip that holds the settings for the BIOS.  In some cases, it will continue to display the old info until it has been cleared.  Here is a link that tells you how to do it:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01746799&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=4010455〈=en

Scroll down towards the bottom of the page.  There you find a section titled " Clearing the CMOS settings".

CAUTION: Do not change any jumper setting while the computer is on. Damage to the motherboard can result.

Re: upgraded the cpu but device driver still shows old processor

hi mrjstak,

same thing happened to me once, but according to Microsoft "This problem is only cosmetic, and it does not affect the performance of the computer"

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930861

That article shows a few resolutions.  I don't think I tried them.  If I remember correctly I ended up doing a clean re-install of vista as I had made some other hardware changes at the same time.

Good Luck!

Re: upgraded the cpu but device driver still shows old processor

Sidenote.... It shows dual processors but one at 5200 and one at 6300. I guess I have to try the cmos settings a second time...
