wi-fi on my ipod

How do i get wi-fi on my ipod- i have cable internet on my desktop- i bought my daughter an ipod for xmas- jus before xmas i was able to get wi-fi- on the ipod-but after we connected to itunes i cant get wi-fi- does it have anything to do with syncing the ipod to itunes or my computer? please help- "ANYONE" !!!! out there- iv been racking my brain trying to figure it out- i know i could call apple support but they give you only "ONE" complimentry free phone for ipods ( unlimited calls for iphone and ipad) so im trying to save the call as last resort- anyway do i need a router to go with my modem that i got from comcast or do i just need  a external antena
