1. Hp Pavillion Desktop a6720y
2. Windows Vista 64 bit
3. Searching for storage devices at startup
4. No changes made that I can think to software or hardware

Soundmaster, welcome to the forum.
It appears that you have a failed hard drive. You can run SMART diagnostics from the BIOS to see what it says.

Tried that. SMART say slave drive was going bad but master OK. Sometime it will go past that screen and see my cd/dvd rom and hard drive. Then when I try to reinstall vista it ask where i want to install and the installer does not see my hard drive and asks me to load drivers. I have sata drives. i even tried pulling a good hard drive out of another computer and got the same results.
