Blue Screen Backing Up to External Hard Drive

I have Windows 7 as my operating system.

I keep getting blue screens when backing up to a seagatego external hard drive. It does not occur immediately, only after 3 - 4 minutes. It occurs no matter what software I use for the backup  . . . Seagate or on-board Microsoft. It also occurs if I try too large of a direct file transfer. I've tried downloading a hotfix from Microsoft that is supposed to fix this error without success. I a current on all Microsoft, HP and Seagate downloads. The error is:

Stop: 0x00000116 (0xfffffA80090F8480, oxfffff8800FF7230, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000002)

HP tech support is telling me I need to completely wipe out everything by reinstalling Vista and then reinstalling Windows 7. Do I have any other alternatives?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Problems Backing Up to External Hard Drive

I got a new My Book 1T external drive and it is having a conflick with my HP computer. I bought my HP with Vista installed recently uploaded Windows 7. Now when I try to copy or back up my files to my external drive, my computer locks up and reboots itself. It gives me a blue screen error on a file named "nvlddmkm.sys". That file seems to be part of my Nvidia Geforce 9100 graphics card software that came with my HP. I went to the Nvidia website and they do not have any updates for the Geforce 9100 running on Windows 7. Can anyone tell me what to do to fix this problem.

Re: Blue Screen Backing Up to External Hard Drive

Wow! It's not just me. I have a p6130y w/ the nvidia 9100 series. I am trying to transfer to a western digital 1T ext hd. It gives me that same exact 0xfffffa800798b420 error, w/ a location of nv7ddmkm.sys. I downloaded the latest driver dated 20 nov 09 ver 8.17.11.9562 from hp, but to no avail. I hope there is a fix soon, because I am not doing a reimage.

Re: Blue Screen Backing Up to External Hard Drive

I've been trying to get this issue fixed for weeks with HP, Microsoft and Nvidia without success. Hope someone comes up with a fix. BTW - have you also started having occasional problems with your keyboard and mouse? My have started acting up where repeated keystrokes don't show up on the screen or the mouse pointer will lock to the top or side of the screen. I'm not sure if they are related but they started at about the same time.

Re: Blue Screen Backing Up to External Hard Drive

When installing the patch...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976972

You will need to click on this to choose the 32 vs 64-bit version of the patch.

Show hotfixes for all platforms and languages (2)

Install the correct one.

Re: Blue Screen Backing Up to External Hard Drive

Using Windows 7 Ultimate and just got the same blue screen. Thought I was through puberty.....related to USB hard drive connections though. I am using WD Smartware and can't restart without disconnecting all USB drivers. Finally got the blue screen but was actually trying to print a document on my cheap Epson WorkForce 500.

Sorry don't have more in the way of a solution but wanted to share.
