Checking NVRAM hangs

I have a hp pavilion a1410y PC that I installed a MSI N8400GS-MD512H GeForce 8400 GS Video Card - 512MB so that I can use 2 monitors. When I boot up it hangs at "Checking NVRAM - update OK". I have installed a 680W power supply and it still hangs. HP tells me to update the BIOS but I am not sure which software to down load. Any HELP PLEASE.

Re: Checking NVRAM hangs

The first thing I would do is remove the video card that you installed and go back to the way it was. Does it work then? If not, it's probably your new card.

Re: Checking NVRAM hangs

Same problem here. Onboard video is bad so I tried the 8400 GS but get the Checking NVRAM... message.  I have a 128kb PCI video card and that works but its so slow.  Is the 8400GS just not compatable?

Re: Checking NVRAM hangs

When I remove the new card, the PC boots up just fine.

Re: Checking NVRAM hangs

I'm facing the exact same issue on a Compaq Presario SR2050NX.

I've upgraded the power supply to 450W. The power supply has a 21A on the +12V connector (the card recommended 18A minimum on the +12V rail and minimum 350W supply). I have the stock hard drive, and CD-ROM drive.

I'm attempting to add a GeForce 8400 GS to the PCI-E slot. During boot, it gets to the "Checking NVRAM..." line and stops booting.

I can remove the new video card and get to Windows every time.

I've reconnected the CDRom to the "Primary" IDE slot -- why it was originally slotted as secondary, who knows.

I've tried moving the RAM to slot 1... same results.

Seeing as how the computer runs with 300W, I've just added 150W dedicated to this video card with all of the appropriate specs and it still won't get past the NVRAM line.

Please help!

Re: Checking NVRAM hangs

My solution...

Trade the GeForce 8400 GS in for a Radeon HD 5450. Same price point, same outputs, same PCI-E requirements...

Worked first try, the way it should.
