Hi,
A few weeks ago i switched on my PC and it showed the Compaq screen but then went to a blank screen & would not respond. I held the switch on button to turn it off and after 4 attempts it booted up fine. The next time it took 20 attempts to boot up and now it does not boot up, maybe it will if i try like 100 times it may do.. The problem is when the Compaq screen comes up it only comes for like a second so i know that it will not boot, if the Compaq screen stays there for few seconds like 3+ i know it will load windows and boot up.
History> The computer orignally had XP and was replaced with VISTA the memory was 2* 512MB but it was a bit slow and i was advised to upgrade. I bought 2*1GB memory and put this in my PC a few months ago maybe 5+ had no problems until now.
I have tried the following:
Removing the memory and replacing it. Removing the 2*1GB memory and replacing it with the orignal 2*512MB to check if the memory is at fault.
Cleaning the dust around the fans (at this point i removed the fan above the CPU and cleaned the thermal paste of the CPU to amke it nice and shiny, only tried booting it once after that for few seconds heard the fan blowing and turend it off. Since then i realised it was not just muck and had a purpose na dhave put some more on)
Removing the BIOS battery for half a day
Moving the CMOS Jumpers from1, 2 to 2, 3 position
I cannot get into the BIOS even if start and hold F1 it will show me the BIOS for a second and then go to a black screen.
Computer Spec
Compaq Presario SR1629UK Desktop PC

The power supply could be bad or you fried the processor by running it without thermal paste.

Thanks for the link i will try and follow the steps in it, i do not think i have fried the processor cause i only put it on for a few seconds. Also there have been no additional changes when i switch it on. It still shows the Compaq screen and then goes to the blank screen, the F10 or F1 do not work as the bios screen only appears for a second then goes back to blank screen, not enough time to check the settings or make amendments...
If i try like 50 times and the PC does boot up, what does that mean? I mean i know even if it does the moment i switch it off i will have the same problem. Also if i remember correctly if i leave it and it enters sleep mode it will not wake up again, so if i have a successful boot i tend to play music on it so it prevents it enetering sleep mode.

I have done what it said in the link and no luck.. I cannot get into the Bios as it only displays it for a second or so the F10, F1 are of no use.
Secondly in the link the stuff about the monitor being blank meaning there is a fault with the monitor cable or monitor that can't be true in my case as the monitor does show the compaq screen for a second and then goes blank...
Any more idea's please?

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your help just wanted to give you lot an update. After going through the gruelling processes of checking the destop, removing the memory, cleaning it & all the other techo checks. I gave my pc to somone to look at he did not try to turn it on he opened it up cleaning it up removed my thermal paste put it back on and told me it was working fine.
When i bought it home all happy i realised i had the same issue i borrowed a different monitor and found it worked fine! So the issue is with my monitor, if anyone else has the same issue try checking a different monitor first.

Hi.
I've got a similar problem with my pc (the power light is flashing).
Following that link I came to the conclusion that it's either the power supply (more likely) or the motherboard.
Can't find any similar power supplies in the UK, only the US.
I'm pretty sure it's ok but can someone confirm that this will be ok?
The power supply in my PC is ATX-300-12Z REV
thanks,
Sean
