Hello main567, From your description, this may be a heat related issue. When playing games, the system would be stressed and therefore generate more heat than it would otherwise.

Here  is the link for the specifications for your system and is shows the system was shipped in 2005.

If you have not cleaned the inside of the system case recently, I would suggest disconnecting the power cord, remove the side panel and clean the inside of the case, paying particular attention to the processor heatsink/fan assembly.

You may need to acquire some canned compressed air to throughly clean the processor heatsink/fan assembly.

When completed cleaning the inside of the case, reinstall the side panel, connect the power cord and boot the system and see if the issue persist.

On my machine there is a different function key to launch diagnostics from the boot screen, but doesn't guarantee that yours has one. We have different models.

hal.dll isn't very helpful, it's the hardware abstraction layer.

I wonder if this could be a video driver. You could try looking for an updated driver, if not on the HP site then on the manufacturer's.

Re: Computer randomly restarts

Hello,

-- First of all disable the auto-restart option from your control panel settings

-- Remove any recently installed maliciously software/add-on or any other application or toolbar.

-- Try to cool down your PC as the overheating due to overuse of computer may result in system freezing and sudden restarting.

-- Update your BIOS.

-- Update the drivers

-- Make it sure the error is not caused by the deficient power supply. You may try to change the power supply.

-- Conduct the registry clean up scan for quick fix of the problem.

-- Remove flashy games and/or untrusted antiviruses/antispywares. Conduct the security scan through the most powerful scanners only.

If you have already been experiencing the computer automatic restart and shutdown problem then read this article Computer Randomly Restarts

Hope it solves your problem.

Hello main567, From your description of the issue you are experiencing, you would not be able to correct all the errors in the registry, unless you performed a fresh install of the operating system.

Here  is the link for the specifications for your system and it shows the system shipped with Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, (Microsoft Service Pack 2).

The F-10 key is the key to press to start the HP Recovery Restore procedure for your system. As others have mentioned, the Recovery Restore key could be different than the one for your system.

Since you mentioned you  already cleaned the system, I would suggest performing a fresh install of the operating system. You would need to backup any data that you would need later.

Re: Computer randomly restarts

My personal opinion is that this is a hardware problem.

Does it do this if you leave the machine alone for a few hours?

Here's something else to try, if  you haven't already: boot into a diagnostic environment and see what happens. I don't know if you'll be able to run all of your usual programs, but give it a try.

To boot into a diagnostic environment,

  1. Click on Start
  2. Click on Run
  3. In the text box, type msconfig and hit the enter key
  4. The System Configuration program should run
  5. Click on "Diagnostic startup"
  6. Click OK
  7. Reboot
  8. When the system reboots, it will automatically warn you that you are running in a diagnostic mode and ask what you want to do
  9. Tell it you want to stay in diagnostic mode
