Desktop shortcuts frozen

For the last 2 days my Desktop shortcuts have not been responding by using the mouse pointer. Have no response, however, can open programmes using Office icon on bottom toolbar with mouse pointer. Have renewed Norton anti virus system recently, But nothing else out of the ordinary.   Please help. Only new to forum so need to use baby steps.  Thank You

Post the model name and product number of your HP product.

For most OSes hold the CTRL and ALT keys and tap the S key 

What is the OS that is installed?

Your issue is called lost associations.  

Did you recently do a repair install or a restore?

i tried the ctrl alt tap s it didnt work

os is vista

model is dv 6000

i did a restore about 3 weeks ago

antivirus is install norton not out dated

i  also tried defrag, disk clean up, virus scan.

I am having the same issue.    My desktop seems to be eternally frozen.  Instead of my mouse's pointer being an arrow it is now a constant rotating circle acting like it is processing something to open.  When I go to task mgr there is nothing listed.  I can open the desktop items by going to start, programs, etc.  Just started doing this 2 days ago.

PLEASE HELP!
