I work in the electronics industry. Intermitent issues can be very difficult to find and determine the root cause. I see lots of dicussion of BAD Resistors. What does this really mean - is it poor manufacturing in assembling the resistors to the MoBo, or is it poor solderability of the component itself, or is it an electrical failure of the component.

A number of years ago we had an issue with surface mount thin film resistor values changing during our assembly process. They seemed to continue to change over time possibly due to heat. The manuafcture actually flew in from Japan to see our problem first hand. They finally tracked down the root cause and admitted to a problem with parts coming out of one particular production plant. What I am trying to say here is if this is truely an issue on the MoBo it may or may not be the the MoBo manufacture's issue. It may go back anothyer layer yet to the manufacture of the component itself. It was a batch related issue. If we received parts from the good plant there was no issue. When we received parts from the bad plant the issue reared it's ugly head. These are difficult to determine once parts are assembled to circuit boards becuase the lot numbers and manufracturing info is located on the reels (packaging) the parts come in. The parts are two small to put info on them. We had to track lot by lot prior to assembly to finally build a picture.

I will keep watching this forum for some final resolution.

CURRLY55:  Thanks for the update.  I'll book you as another BIOS "success" to flame the "mobo is the problem"  crowd, but it could be the graphics driver! 

The parts-process by site list was orinially trying to track the origin of the units to see if there was a parts or process problem at any one HP site.  We found the freezers were coming from China, Mexico and Czechoslovakia, so we couldn't pin it down to anywhere. 

However, it does appear that most of the machines in the thread are CTOs from HP.  So there could be a parts or process issue in or of that.

From the reports only 5-10 have indicated they were bought from Costco or Frys (I tried to keep track of those).    If there are off-the-shelf buyers who disagree, could they post please.

I bought mine from frys in July... Took it back a week later and got a replacement thinking I just got a bad one with bsod and random freezes. I have mine completly updated (5.22 bios, all current drivers) and it still gets random freezes and bsod. The first time I sent it in for repair, all the service center did was reload the 5.22 bios saying it was currupt. I got it back about 2 weeks ago and within 2 hours bsod and freezes continued. It is now back on the way back to Hp for the second attempted fix... How many of these "fixes" do I have to go through before they will replace my machine or give me my money back?

This month's Consumer Reports has a review of computers. All the Window's based computers have about 20% which have either been repaired or had serious problems. I have no idea what the percentage is with the Pegatron MOBOs, but that's a pretty ugly statistic.
