I would agree with madstopfern. Changing a motherboard is a lot like anything else. If you've done a few, it's not all that hard. But if you are not familuar with doing this, I would not recommend it. One of the problems with these systems is that they are not full ATX cases, and have very little room to work in. Everything has to be removed except for the optical drive(s) and power supply.
HP will not ship you a motherboard and allow you to replace the defective one anyway.
Most of these so-called technicians, will just change the board out and be on their way.
Any computer repair person worth their salt, will reinstall the operating system when a new motherboard is installed, especially since the new one is different from the defective one. If this is not done, you can expect trouble at some point in the future.
Even if you send it back for repair to HP, you have no assurance it will be done properly. It seems to be a toss up, since many customers have had to send their systems back 3-4 times.
Good luck on getting your system in the proper working order.

X7,
I believe you are correct in that you do not have the latest versions. My Belarc reports this:
Board: PEGATRON CORPORATION TRUCKEE 1.04E01
Serial Number: xxx.
Bus Clock: 133 megahertz
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 5.24 10/29/2009

If you have a persistent broadband connection it can wake the computer from sleep mode on a regular basis. Go to Device Manager/Network Adapters/Intel 2 Gigabit Network Connection. Double click on it and go to the Power Management tab. Uncheck "Allow this device to wake the computer". Click OK. Let us know if that works.

I've been lurking on this board for a couple of months. Purchased an Elite e9180t in late August. It had the freeze problem right out of the box, but I didn't discover this site and learn about the manufacturing defect until after the return period expired. Problem persisted after a clean install of Windows 7, at which point I finally discovered this forum. I chatted with an HP rep over the Internet and was instructed to update BIOS (to 5.22) and my Nvidia drivers. This did not solve the problem. During Thanksgiving weekend, I called HP tech on the telephone. The rep wanted me to do a system restore and other trouble-shooting, but I protested, referred him to this thread and said that the problem appears to be a defective motherboard. After placing me on hold, the technician came back, said this was a "known issue" and instructed me to ship the unit to HP for replacement of the motherboard. Computer came back this past Friday with BIOS 5.24 and a new Truckee 1.04E01 motherboard. Computer has been working like a charm all weekend.

That fixed the problem. Thanks!

Hey guys. Just seeing what has been going on for the past couple of weeks. I haven't followed the thread for a few weeks. My status with my e9280t is still good. I think at this point, I would go as far as to say it's problem free. It's been about 5 weeks or so now. Haven't had one freeze or one BSOD at all. Sleep mode works fine. Works fine after it's been cold booted. I think my headache with HP is finally over.

Update: Tech just left. Belarc confirmed that I have the new correct board. My replacement was only labeled rev. 1.04. Thanks for all the help. I chuckled to myself when the tech was getting aggravated with the fan error. I told him to put the fan connector in the orange colored slot with a grin (that I had read off this forum). He looked at me very strangly but took my advice. BINGO. Hope all is fixed.

Hey guys, I'm really happy to see that all of you are joining me with good machines. Even though I still have the old v1.04 and 5.22 BIOS I now have 125 days clean running. I'm glad to have company now.![]()

You would think that Pegatron would make this very small correction in the label of the CPU fan header.
After all, this is a KNOWN ISSUE. But they don't seem to recognize known issues.
I still have my original 1.03 board with the 5.22 BIOS and still have to reinstall via a disk image every few days.
It takes less than 10 minutes to accomplish this, which is far quicker than sending the system back to HP 3-4 times and still have the issues.
The system works for a few days and then starts acting up. Reminds me of the wife.
I suppose I will put up with this until sometime in the spring, and then build me a system that works as it should.
Good luck to those that seem to have success with getting their systems to work as advertised.
