HP Pavilion Elite m9780be freezing a lot

Dear HP users,

I bought my new desktop (m9780be) a few days ago, i was very satisfied with it 'till the first freezing. It happened right after i connected to the internet (while installing a game). At first i thought i was dealing with a personal mistake (first time windows vista user). But after the first time i had a few other freezes and now i'm up to a freeze every 1.5 hours... . I don't think this pc has to work like this. Nothing responds, the only way to shut down (or restart) the desktop is to press the on-button for 10 sec, wich you would call a hard-shut-down or something like that. I've browsed the forums here and noticed a lot of desktops of the elite series suffer from this problem. I've updated my bios and graphic card but the problem is persistent. Can anyone confirm if their desktop (from my serie) give the same problems? Else if, what can i do about it? If i don't get an answer before saturday i'll just give back my desktop and demand a refund or something like that. I don't want to be rude, but i just don't understand why such pc's can enter the market, is there anything like a control before release? The store where i bought my PC will give me a new one immediatly (within the month) but what use does it have if all desktops suffer the same flaw? I'll return it and will demand the same one back, working! I'll also post the link to this thread and the other threads concerning freezing and lockup's, i hope their hp-repair section gets a faster respons (and solution) then you guys.

Since I don't see a response to your post I'll give you my opinion. Your m9780be suffers the same random freezing and BSODs as the e9150t and m9600t. It has the same motherboard and I assume m9780be is the model number of the same machine sold in Belgium.

Judging by the other posts in these forums, you may or may not get a good replacement if you exchange it for a new one. If you don't want to take that chance, you should get a refund. The least satisfactory resolution is for a repair to be attempted on your machine.

I agree with your incomprehension about HP's lack of quality control. They used to have a good reputation. People have been complaining on these forums for over six months about this problem and it appears they only recently have begun to pay any attention. This would be a great machine if it ran dependably.

After upgrading my BIOS and OS service pack 2, i kept on having the same problem. So it was simple to me i brought it back to the shop and bought me a new pc HP-030, should come out in the next two weeks! I hope it doesn't have the same problems or it'll be the last time we buy a HP computer (we have 8 @ home), i'm glad the shop has a good service, cause it fails over here. I'm not very mad, cause i only had my PC for 1 week, but i'm mad for all those who have their problem for a few months and not getting any reply or decent support!

I have an e9180t and it freezes about every 30 mins when I'm on a video game.  I have the most recent drivers for nivdia, HP & Win 7.  Essentially the game starts stuttering and then about 30 secs later it freezes.  A couple of times have received the BSOD and it refers to a Clock Issue on the 2nd CPU.  HP service has been useless-  The usual responses of blaming Windows, the game manufacturer (Have had problems on Dragon Age, Torchlight & Call of Duty 2) etc - blaming everyone except their machine.  The tech folks imply I should spend a few more hours trying various solutions until I'm able to fix it myself:  They don't seem to realize that non-computer people don't want to spend hours try to fix their PCs.

Am send this BofS back if they can't resolve it.

You only have 2 options to resolve the freezing and BSOD problem with your e9180t.  Return it for a refund or send it to HP for service.  The problem is the motherboard and HP must replace it with revision 1.04E01 BIOS 5.24.  This is a well documented problem in another thread on this forum.  This are no other solutions.

Same problem here with my m9780be.

I hope it will not get worse. I'll do some more investigation in the forums before making a decision about what to do with it.

It's quite disturbing to discover such facts behind the "rock solid" reputation of HP. Also not a good experience with a brand new "top-range" (and rather expensive) PC.

Hi, I and my brother in law has bought the m9780be on totally different times... (mine is almost a year old, whilst my brother in law has a version bought about six months ago).

I am considering to toss out the motherboard, and put in an ASUS Rampage II instead... this board seems to be having all the same connections, and I am confident that this will solve my hangs, freezes and all other weird stuff.

I already replaced the somewhat exotic videocard GT230 (which is only available as OEM I understand) - but still I am having all the weirdest things going on... the past weekend has been spent trying to recover my harddisks, only to notice when you try to recover data over eSATA (with Acronis) you only get READ errors.

When hooking up onto another computer with eSATA (mind you, an older ASUS motherboard with E6400 cpu) - it just copies to whole bunch without an issue. For those believing that it might be the external disk, when hooking up over USB, it just works fine - so it is in my true belief, that this motherboard really is some bad piece of equipment...

I will repost my findings when I have the ASUS Rampage II installed, I just need to make sure that the installed memory is compatible, the Rampage II is to be told, not to go on 1333MHz or more...

The latest bios posted is 5.28.  You should update to that level.  If you have Seagate hard drives, then go to the Seagate web site and look for a firmware update.

I use external eSATA drives for backups and booting without issues.  Check here for the JMB36x chipset update.

Thanks for the advice, but both BIOSses are already on 5.28

I too can backup just fine, using Windows... but recovery is a pain.

I have never upgraded a firmware of a harddrive that is a member of a RAID set - can I do this without any risk ?

And yes, they are Seagate drives... I'll check around google and seagate to see if RAID members can be updated without risks already...

Checking Seagate tells me that there is no update for my harddrive, so this rules out any risk for me, right now ;-)
