HP Pavilion a6500t freezes after power outage

Alrighty, so here's the deal. Yesterday I had a power outage in my room. My computer was on at the time, so it naturally shut off once the power went out. This isn't an uncommon thing, since I live in a rural area and power lines go down occasionally. Anyways, after I started it back up, everything seemed to be working normal, except that after I had logged in and everything had loaded up, the entire computer would freeze.

The first time it happened I had already opened up an internet window, and I thought that that might have caused the freeze, but it did not. Now, regardless of what is open or not open, the computer freezes after the initial startup programs have finished loading. About one to two minutes after logging in. I can' cntr/alt/delete out of it, the entire thing is stuck, and the only way out is to manually turn off the computer by holding down the power button.

All my fans are running, and the light is green on the back of the computer where the power supply is, so I don't think that is the issue. I'm guessing it might be a memory thing, but I'm not sure. Right now I'm in safe mode with networking, which works absolutely fine with no hiccups whatsoever. That's how I'm accessing the internet, but the moment I try and run it in normal mode, it freezes up.

Sorry for all the text. If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it greatly.

Hi,

A memory issue or a video card issue would be the primary suspects.  Safe mode uses a different video driver and memory might not be used in the same areas as not being in safe mode.

Try this bootable memory diagnostic CD. Download memtest86 iso file and burn it to disk using Imgburn.

You might try some diagnostics via the bios and/or by the HP Support Assistant( not likely since you can't get in normal mode).

Re: HP Pavilion a6500t freezes after power outage

Thank you for replying!

I used the memory diagnostic thing on startup, and after running through everything it said that the computer passed with 100% completion. Does that mean that it could be something with the video card? Is there anyway that I can check that? Unfortunately, I don't have enough time to run a diagnostic check before the computer freezes after startup.

Re: HP Pavilion a6500t freezes after power outage

Hi,

Another possibility is that you can some hard drive data corruption.

Try the following commands from the RUN window:

cmd

sfc /scannow -----> this will verify the critical files on your hard drive and attempt repairs

You might not be able to run the above command in safe mode but give it go.

If you can get you data backup to external media then do so.  You might need to try a full HP recovery using the HP recovery disks.  You do have a set of the recovery disks, right?

I'm running the scan right now. It runs in safe mode, thank goodness.

I do have my HP recovery disks, thankfully I followed the prompts when starting up the computer. Thankfully, if I have to backup my data, I really only have word, excel, and powerpoint files that shouldn't be too difficult to transfer. If it's data corruption, than would reinstalling everything fix the problem?

Hi,

If the hard drive is suspect, then you might also need to run a chkdsk on hard drive.

RUN window:

cmd

chkdsk
