Yes, it has happened! After one year of use of my HP Pavilion desktop, a6270y, I got a frozen screen. After trying to restore, I called HP Tech Support, paid my $50, an was told it was my hard drive. "Don't bother taking it to Best Buy because it's GONE!" I purchased another hard drive from HP, paid for expedited shipping. Then I took my hard drive to Best Buy anyway in hopes they could pull off some data - guess what? The tech grinned and said, "Your motherboard is fried!" No problem with the hard drive! I spent 4 hours on the phone with HP and finally got a refund of everything. NO MORE HP COMPUTERS UNTIL THIS ISSUE IS FIXED!
I agree - the customer service reps had no sympathy. I told them, after 4 hours, that I was hanging up and calling my credit card company to protest the charges - that I was refusing the shipment of the hard drive - and I had no intention of backing down. I finally won.
Now I get on this forum and I see that everyone is having this problem. No wonder the Geek Squad guy smiled when he saw the motherboard - he's seen this many times. And, Best Buy continues to sell HP computers! I'm going after them, next.
