Hi, I have a HP Pavilion (don't have model no. at moment) runing on NT which is a number of years old, and which is now hanging on startup with black screen. When I startup in safe mode, it also hangs. I can get to the command prompt, but don' really know what to do when I get there. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi,
In the Command Prompt type the command below. This will check drive c for errors and attempt to fix them.
chkdsk c: /f (there is a space between chkdsk and c) (There is a space c: and /f)
Hope this helps,
DP-K
