Power drops; system re-starts

All began with power cycling at boot-up; 3 or 4 times before it would "catch" and then everything ran just fine.

I knew the chassis probably needed a good cleaning: done.

Now, a day later, and several times a day, the power just drops out from under system. (Desk lamp, monitors, printer, etc. remain powered from the same power strip.)

Immediately, the system re-boots, presents the start options, and proceeds to OS.

System noise levels normal, and I do feel air moving out of the chassis at the rear.

The HP Diagnostic package that runs every month has indicated no problem of any kind.

That's what I know...thoughts?

Re: Power drops; system re-starts

Hi diddumsk,

I am not an expert; I see red flags.  I tend to be somewhat passion stricken about power issues.  :smileyhappy:  Forgive my fervor, please.

Things to consider:

  • Your "power strip" may be faulty, not up to the job, overstressed.  I hate plain, useless, little power strips.  Weak little excuses: extension cords with too many outlets.  Beware.
  • Your running this on one circuit - same problem: check the voltage at the wall.  It may be fluctuating or constantly low.   Consider splitting the load.  Cannot do it?  Stick an LED in the lamp.  Smiling.
  • You need better than a power strip - you need a decent UPS, Battery backup, with under and over current protection.  One that will email you with the information and that you can log into (via your network).
  • If you cannot get the Battery Backup, at least invest in the best Power surge under/over voltage protector you can afford... with a switch... with 12 gauge wire.
  • The power supply on the computer may be failing.  For example:  If you have upgraded your graphics card, say, from a 2GB to a 3GB and you didn't upgrade your power supply, you may not have enough power to run the system anymore...
  • The power supply on your computer might be failing because it has become a useless pile of metal, plastic, and wires.  Call your HP representative.  Would the diagnostics catch this?  I would think so... ?
  • Call your Power company - something may have changed in your immediate neighborhood and it may be affecting your house / apartment.  You might be able to have this checked (no expense to you if you live in the USA).  If it did change, and they will not or cannot fix it, you might be back to self protection:  Big, Giant, Battery backup units.  We had to do this for all our electronics, BTW.

I hope this helps!
