I have an hp RUNNING VISTA. i TURN THE COMPUTER ON AND GET THE MESSAGE; Reboot ane Select proper boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key. What is this, and how can I get the computer to boot itself? Thanks, peace.

Hi:
It is possible that the hard drive has failed.

This is usually a case where the computer no longer recognizes the hard drive or the boot sector of the hard drive has been damaged. Sometimes if you leave a DVD/CD in your DVD/CD and your computer is set to read from the DVD/CD first, you can get this message if it is damaged or can not boot. The same can happen if you have a floppy drive with a bad disk in it. Sometime even a flash drive left connected can cause a problem. I would also disconnect anything like a printer or external devices that are not necessary, including your keyboard and mouse just to make sure they are not shorting the system.
