HI,

You might be having a video problem.  What video card is installed in your PC?

Try this procedure:

Unplug the PC and open it up. Clean out all the dust. Carefully remove and replace all the cables going to the motherboard one at a time. Do the same for the memory dimms and the video and sound cards if you have any.  You might want to buy a can of compressed air to blow the dust out of the CPU heat sink and video card.  Plug your PC back in and give it a go.

Boot into the Bios (f10 setup) and go to the Boot drop down and select Boot Time Diagnostic Screen and enable it. Save the setting when you exit and boot up you PC and run diagnostics.

Re: pavilion ultimate 4996t freezes and must have hard boot

Thanks for your reply, Dave.  I did clean it with compressed air, but computer failed completely anyway.  Since it was 4 1/2 years old, I decided it wasn't worth repairing and bought a new one.  Hard drives were still good, so I installed one of them on my new computer and I'm back in working order as of today!
