If the computer booted correctly, check to make sure the ethernet cable is connected properly. There will be blinking light indicating network activity if it is connected on the back of the computer. (next to the ethernet plug). For more thorough help, need to know the computer model and the OS being used.

Do you have DSL or Cable Modem? If so which Company.
Also do you have a router betwene the modem the pc.
And also does your desktop normally connect wirelessly or is it wired?
