Had to F11 my Vista 32bit Desktop (Presario SR5210NX) and reinstall 90+ Windows updates.
Cannot install last update Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 and NET Framework 3.5 Family update (KB951847).
Ony have Framework 1.1 installed.
Have tried Microsoft Fix it amongst other things with no luck.
Do I have to first install Framework 2 and 3 before version 3.5?

You can install that application w/o upgrading.
Try the standalone download and see if that goes.

Thank you Paul. You seemed to be the only person who could provide me with help.
After I installed your suggested update, I was able to install the Framework 3.5 update I was having problems with.
Then also installed Vista SP 1 update yesterday.
Today it was another 73 updates. Then Vista SP 2. Also then able to upgrade to IE9.
I really appreciate you help.

You're very welcome.
I also like to install the service packs by direct download.
I install Vista , then go right to Vista SP1, then go right to Vista SP2, and then you only have one huge set of updates instead of several.

Hello Paul I am also trying to install Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 and NET Framework 3.5 Family update (KB951847) and vista 32-bit sp1 through windows update. But I get error code 57 when I install both. When I install Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 and NET Framework 3.5 Family update (KB951847) alone I get code 80240016. I tried the standalone download from your link http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?
but I get the message 'setup.exe has stopped working (close program)'. I am a complete computer noob and feel so helpless. I don't know what Framework I have. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance, InsultingBoy

Try first manually installing Vista SP1 then SP2 from those manual download links I posted.
Then try the MS Net Framework 3.5 downloads.

Hello Paul. Today I went to http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?

It should take almost an hour or so to install the Vista service packs, so installing it in less than a minute can't be right.
My only suggestion is to try the Microsoft windows update autofix.
If that doesn't work, I would start a new thread.

Hello Paul. I went to your link http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_update/ and clicked 'run now'. After the troubleshooting is done, in the 'fix status' section, there are three 'issues found' that are marked as 'not fixed' with a red X.
1 Windows Update error 0x80070057(2013-12-17-T-11_20_45A)
2 Problems installing recent updates
3 Cryptographic service components are not registered
Then I click Next, then choose 'Get online solutions tailored to your PC's specific problem'. Then I click Send. Under the 'send troubleshooter results' it says: An error occurred while sending your information to microsoft, which is a dead end.
I then return to your link and click 'find other automated solutions' above 'Run Now'.
1 I choose Windows
2 Install or upgrade software or hardware > Windows update
To my surprise, it is the exact same cycle, with the exact same three 'not fixed issues' as above. So can you help me with these problems? I don't know how to 'start a new thread' (computer noob). Can you write me instructions about how to? Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to help you with the issue. I am not a PC repair person by trade and I have no in depth troubleshooting experience with those kind of situations.
To start a new thread, if you have a desktop PC, click on the link below, and then click on the big orange New Post box on the left side of the page to start a new topic.
